Have you ever wondered, what the story is behind St Valentine’s Day?
Saint Valentines Day is an annual festival to celebrate romantic love, friendship and admiration.
Every year on 14th February people celebrate this day by sending messages of love and affection to partners, family and friends. Couples send their loved ones, Valentine’s Day Cards and flowers and spend special time together to honour their love for each other.
The true story behind this beautiful day, is named after Saint Valentine, a catholic priest who lived in Rome in the 3rd Century.
At the time of Valentine’s life, many Romans were converting to Christianity, but the Emperor Claudius II was a pagan and created strict laws about what Christians were allowed to do.
Claudius believed that Roman soldiers should be totally devoted to Rome and therefore passed a law preventing them from marrying.
Saint Valentine began to help marry these soldiers in secret, as he believed in the importance of love and companionship.
Claudius found out and imprisoned Valentine, Valentine was later executed on 14th February year 270. It wasn’t until 200 years later that 14 February was declared as Saint Valentine’s Day.
The practice of sending love messages have developed over the years, first it was terms of endearment, handmade cards and messages to show ones affection to another.
In Edwardian times, Saint Valentine’s Day cards would be embellished with hearts, roses, cupids and trimmed with ribbons and lace.
For us in Britain, a single red rose is often sent to a loved one, where as in USA, the sending of an expensive gift such as a piece of heart jewellery to their loved one.
In India, they give a handcrafted gift, Bulgaria they celebrate with a glass of wine, whereas in Wales, they exchange a special handcrafted wooden spoon.
